Geriatric Medicine

NOMS Geriatrics focuses on health promotion, prevention, and diagnosis and treatment of disease and disability in older adults.

NOMS’ geriatricians are internal medicine specialists who have special knowledge of the aging process and singular skills in the diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitative aspects of illness in the elderly. They see patients in the office and long-term care settings such as assisted living and retirement communities.

They are trained to diagnose conditions that often present differently in older adults; develop care plans that address the special physical and mental health care needs of older adults; communicate with appropriate providers in other areas of specialty, family members and other caregivers; and, take a patient-centered, holistic approach to maintaining older adults’ functional status, independence and best possible quality of life.

At a Glance

Bone loss

Occurring in both men and women, osteoporosis is present when bones become thin, lose density and become increasingly fragile during aging. The good news is, the condition can be prevented or reversed with treatments, including a nutrient- and mineral-rich diet targeted to building and maintaining bone with calcium, vitamin D and phosphorous.

Mobility & Falls

Often taken for granted, the ability to move or walk freely and easily can decline with aging. Mobility is key to daily care, functioning well and living independently. The primary reasons for a decline in mobility are changes in gait, balance and physical strength; treatments and therapies are available. Depending on the severity of the condition, left unaddressed, it can lead to increased falls, limited social life, and reduced or eliminated independent activities.

Incontinence & Pelvic Floor

A natural part of aging, many women experience different levels of urinary incontinence. Depending on the severity, the condition can lead to depression, social isolation, caregiver burden, and loss of independence. Often the first prescribed treatment includes exercises to strengthen pelvic floor to support the bladder.

Cognitive Decline & Dementia

Although dementia and mild cognitive impairment are both common in aging ranging from a minor to a severe decline. These normal cognitive changes can affect an older adult’s day to day function, quality of life, and independence.
